CHAPTER TEN
David McCarter stalked the alley behind the hotel and paused, looking at his CPDA, searching for the reservations of the dead he’d discovered in the depths of the Atlantic just off the island. This hotel was the destination for five of those identified as having been on the trip. He frowned. Other suspected dead were placed at different hotels, and all five of the places had been listed as the buildings where hostages had been holed up by Option Omega to keep the world’s militaries at bay.
That made things simpler for McCarter. Now he was certain that those murdered and dumped at the bottom of the ocean were victims in this mad plan. He frisked himself with one hand to make certain that the Walther and his knives were tucked away from where people would notice them on a casual once-over. If Option Omega’s thugs had full military, police or even department of corrections training, then they would be willing to feel for weaponry in the Briton’s crotch and other out-of-the-way places. If not, then he was going to have a chance, but he wasn’t going to rely on the incompetence of his opponents.
He was going to have to get into the hotel unseen if he wanted to bring his weapons with him. If he wanted to get inside the hotel easily, though, without raising any alarm, he would have to disarm, stash the weaponry and play the part of helpless civilian. It’d be hard. The fox-faced Briton was as rough and tumble as they got. Even though he’d calmed, gotten more “civilized” as the leader of Phoenix Force, he still was exactly what he’d been when he came to Mack Bolan’s crusade against terrorism—he was a Cockney hard-ass.
He weighed the options either way, and decided to do what he used to do best when left to his own devices in the field.
Approach the problem head-on, like a bull in a China shop.
He figured that it wouldn’t do much to harm the hostage situation. He wasn’t geared up to appear as a member of an outside commando unit, and McCarter was also the instructor at a school for bodyguards, personal servants and hotel detectives under one of his identities in England. He sent a quick text to Stony Man Farm to hook up his current cover identity with his school credentials so that he could better appear to be a trainer for the hotel staff who decided to take a more active role against the people messing with his hotel.
McCarter spent a few moments loosening up, limbering and oxygenating his body for either fight or flight. He checked for a response from the Farm.
“ID confirm. Plan?”
That had to be Price. She knew him well enough to realize that McCarter was going to do something audacious. If it was one thing that he and Mack Bolan agreed on, it was that a good bluff and show of force was more than sufficient to make people buy whatever you wanted.
And McCarter only had one simple, symbolic reply—a smiley face with devil horns.
